What to Expect

Trying something new can feel intimidating, but don’t worry—we’re here to make your Learn-to-Row experience is smooth and fun! Rowing is an incredible full-body workout, and with a few sessions, you’ll start to feel confident in the boat.

  • Learn-to-Row session (mid-June - mid-August)

    Meet the Team & Coaches – Introductions & basic rowing terms
    ✅ Equipment Overview – How to handle an oar, adjust foot stretchers, and get in the boat
    ✅ Dock & Water Basics – Learning balance, stroke sequence, and safety precautions
    ✅ First Row! – A gentle, technique-focused row with coaching from experienced teammates and coaches

    You don’t need to be in top athletic shape to start rowing! We will guide you through everything and make sure you feel comfortable as you learn.

    You’ll gain experience sweeping (one oar per person), sculling (two oars per person), indoor rowing (using the Concept 2 ergometer), and coxing (the eyes and brain of the boat, steering and instructing rowers during practices). 

    We offer Learn-to-Row opportunities for all ages 14 and up.

  • Gear Guide – What to Wear & Where to Get It

    Rowing requires snug-fitting athletic clothing to prevent fabric from catching on the oar handles or sliding seat. Here’s what you’ll need:

    👕 Top: A fitted t-shirt or tank top (moisture-wicking recommended)
    👖 Bottoms: Spandex shorts, leggings, or compression gear (avoid loose pants or baggy shorts)
    🧦 Socks: Always wear socks! The rowing shoes in the boat are shared.
    🧢 Hat & Sunglasses: Protect against sun glare on the water
    🧴 Sunscreen: A must for long practices!

    Where to Buy Rowing Gear

    🔹 Basic Activewear: Available at Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or other athletic wear stores
    🔹 Rowing-Specific Gear: JL Racing, Boathouse Sports, and RegattaSport carry rowing unis, technical apparel, and accessories
    🔹 Used Equipment: Facebook Marketplace & rowing club swaps are great for finding deals

    🔹 Team Uniforms: For competitive rowers, we will have team-branded gear available for order before regatta season.

  • Safety & Rules – Rowing Smart on Clinton Lake

    Rowing Safety is Our Priority

    While rowing is a low-impact sport, safety is key when working on the water. Follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and safe experience.

    Pre-Row Checklist

    ✔️ Hydration: Bring a full water bottle to stay hydrated
    ✔️ Weather Check: We do not row in storms, high winds, or extreme cold
    ✔️ Warm-Up & Stretch: Prevent injuries with dynamic stretching before practice
    ✔️ Know Your Crew Position: Always listen to your coxswain or coach

    On-the-Water Rules

    🔹 Stay in Your Seat – Moving unexpectedly can throw off the boat’s balance
    🔹 Follow Commands – The coxswain or coach will give clear instructions
    🔹 Emergency Stops – Learn and practice "weigh enough" (stopping immediately)
    🔹 Avoid Obstacles – Be aware of fishing boats, debris, or changing wind conditions
    🔹 Flipping Protocol: In the rare event of a capsize, stay with the boat—it floats!

    🔹 Life Jackets – Required in the launch, optional in the boat
    🔹 Lightning Policy – We do not row if thunder is heard within 30 minutes of practice
